Online Marketing Resources
Want to go deeper into the marketing funnel? Check out this cheat sheet of my favorite marketing resources.
Ditch jargon, embrace jam. Free frameworks, case studies, and live Q&As for founders and marketers who believe great marketing starts with purpose—not a fancy degree.
This post is essentially a list of my favorite marketing resources organized by topic. I created it for those of you who prefer to be hands on and just want to know where to find the best information. Accordingly, if you are interested in learning more about any of the topics I've highlighted below, I guarantee the resource(s) I have noted is a great place to start. If you are looking for information on something I haven’t covered, add a note to this post and I’ll loop back with a resource recommendation for you.
I've certainly taken advantage of my share of free resources (why recreate the wheel when someone is offering to give you one for free) and webinars (just because they are trying to sell you something doesn't mean you won't get valuable information during the session), and I encourage you to do the same! That said, no pressure, this community is where you can come if you just want me to tell you what I'm reading / thinking / learning about! I spend my days engrossed in marketing so you don’t have to!
#entrepreneurship
I absolutely love the NPR podcast 'How I Built This' with Guy Raz. It's essentially a series of interviews with entrepreneurs from around the world talking about how they built their businesses, and I'm always surprised by what I learn. If you are a new entrepreneur and like listening to podcasts, I guarantee you'll enjoy hearing all the fascinating origin stories. https://www.npr.org/series/490248027/how-i-built-this
Update 04/12/24 — This podcast seems to have gone paid since I last listened to it. I’m going to see if I can find something new to recommend.
#marketing
This one might not be for everyone as they cover a broad swath of marketing news for #marketingnerd(s) like me, but I really like the Raisin Bread newsletter from MarketerHire. If you want to know what marketers are talking about, this is one place you can go. https://marketerhire.com/newsletter
I also like listening to Amy Porterfield's 'Online Marketing Made Easy' podcast. I find her to be both relatable and engaging, and I really enjoy her from the trenches approach. If you are looking for practical advice and step-by-step tutorials, then Amy is your gal! https://www.amyporterfield.com/amy-porterfield-podcast/
#paidsearch
Wordstream by Local IQ is my go to when it comes to paid search (aka pay per click or PPC advertising). They publish really good benchmark data and I tend to at least skim all of their emails because they are actually informative. https://www.wordstream.com/blog
Tinuti is another great player in the space — especially if you have an e-commerce business. Tinuti tends to cover the triopoly of google, facebook, and amazon, which anyone playing in online retail needs to master. They also tend to do a lot of webinars, so you can sign up for a deep dive on a specific topic pretty much whenever you like. https://tinuiti.com/blog/
#research
I follow a few research companies as they each cover something slightly different. The 3 options I note below help me tremendously as a marketer, but I recommend you search out the top trade blogs in your sector and try out a few of them - there is sure to be one that will serve as inspiration for you.
First, there is Nielsen. For those of you who know me well, you might know that my background is in entertainment and Nielsen is basically the only game in town for audience measurement. I tend to check out their reports on a regular basis as I like to stay in the know on consumer trends. https://www.nielsen.com/insights/type/report/
Adweek is another good one for staying on top of what is happening in the brand / advertising / media eco-sphere. I tend to bounce around between their different newsletter offerings depending on what I or my clients might be interested in at the time. https://www.adweek.com/newsletter-signup/
Lastly, I follow CB Insights. It's a bit of an odd man out on this list, but they cover technology and provide intelligence about how sectors are evolving. To be honest, I don't always read this one, but I do always get good information when I do — which is whenever they cover a sector I'm engaged in. https://www.cbinsights.com/newsletter/
#seo
Neil Patel is the leader in this space, but I'm honestly just starting to follow him. What that means is I can't speak to my own experience as a reader just yet, but I highly doubt he'd have the audience and reputation he does if he wasn't the real deal. https://neilpatel.com/blog/
#socialmedia
The Hootsuite Blog is one of my absolute favorites. They consistently provide a lot of valuable information and free resources. In fact, I think the social media audit template I use with clients is based on something I originally got from Hootsuite that has just evolved over time. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. https://blog.hootsuite.com/
